Not just moms expectant dads get depressed too

first_imgWhile “baby blues” as well as prenatal depression are linked mainly with women, researchers have now found that a significant number of first-time expectant fathers too experience depression during their partner’s pregnancy. The findings may have important clinical implications for depression screening and early prevention efforts in expectant fathers.“The mental health of men remains a neglected area of research and one that is not adequately addressed during the transition to parenthood,” said senior study author Deborah Da Costa, associate professor at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’The research team recruited 622 men in Canada over a period of one and a half years. Expectant fathers completed online questionnaires measuring various factors such as mood, physical activity, sleep quality, social support, marital adjustment, financial stress, and demographics, during their partner’s third semester. Researchers found that 13.3 per cent of expectant fathers experienced elevated levels of depressive symptoms during their partner’s pregnancy. The researchers also found that men who were having sleep difficulties were more at risk of experiencing depression.“These are important signals because some of these factors may worsen in postpartum; certainly sleep will be compromised in the first years,” Da Costa explained. The findings appeared in the American Journal of Men’s Health.last_img read more

Google Rolls Out First Working Prototype of SelfDriving Car

first_img Hear from business owners and CEOs who went through a crippling business problem and came out the other side bigger and stronger. This story originally appeared on Fortune Magazine Listen Now Problem Solvers with Jason Feifer December 23, 2014 Google said Monday that it has taken another big step forward in developing self-driving cars by building a fully functioning prototype of its own design.“Today we’re unwrapping the best holiday gift we could’ve imagined: the first real build of our self-driving vehicle prototype,” Google said in a blog post.Google unveiled its latest model – a tiny two-passenger car – in May, generating worldwide buzz. But on Monday, the company admitted that it was just a mock-up that lacked much of what you’d expect in a car.“It didn’t even have real headlights!” Google said.Google has said that its car would be built without a steering wheel, gas pedals and brakes, which are, in theory, unnecessary because passengers can just sit back and relax while technology handles the steering. To drive on public streets in California, however, Google must install traditional controls, just in case a human driver needs to take over.Google GOOG 1.65% plans to build about 100 prototype cars and test them for the next few years, the company said.Previously, Google’s tests of the futuristic technology involved modified Toyota Priuses and Lexus SUVs. Over the past few years, the company had logged hundreds of thousands of miles in such cars on public roads.Since showing off the mock-up in May, Google has been hard at work on coming up with new prototype. The process involved using different versions to test individual car components that handle the steering and braking along with the computers and sensors required for autonomous driving technology.“We’re going to be spending the holidays zipping around our test track, and we hope to see you on the streets of Northern California in the new year,” the company said.As of last month, seven companies including Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Tesla have received permits to test self-driving cars on public roads in California, making it a hotbed for the technology. 2 min readlast_img read more

Tensorflow 19 now officially supports Raspberry Pi bringing machine learning to DIY

first_imgThe Raspberry Pi board developers can now make use of the latest TensorFlow 1.9 features to build their board projects. Most developers use Raspberry Pi for shaping their innovative DIY projects. The Pi also acts as a pathway to introduce people to programming with an added benefit of coding in Python. The main objective of blending TensorFlow with the Raspberry Pi board is to let people explore the capabilities of machine learning on cost-effective and flexible devices. Eben Upton, the founder of the Raspberry Pi project, says, “It is vital that a modern computing education covers both fundamentals and forward-looking topics. With this in mind, we’re very excited to be working with Google to bring TensorFlow machine learning to the Raspberry Pi platform. We’re looking forward to seeing what fun applications kids (of all ages) create with it.” By being able to use TensorFlow features, existing users, as well as new users, can try their hand on live machine learning projects. Here are few real-life examples of Tensorflow on Raspberry Pi: DonkeyCar platform DonkeyCar, a platform to build DIY Robocars, uses TensorFlow and the Raspberry Pi to create self-driving toy cars. Object Recognition Robot The Tensorflow framework is useful for recognizing objects. This robot uses a library, a camera, and a Raspberry Pi, using which one can detect up to 20,000 different objects. Waste sorting robot This robot is capable of sorting every piece of garbage with the same precision as a human. This robot is able to recognize at least four types of waste. To identify the category to which it belongs, the system uses TensorFlow and OpenCV. One can easily install Tensorflow from the pre-built binaries using Python pip package system from the pre-built binaries. One can also install it by simply running these commands on the Raspbian 9 (stretch) terminal: sudo apt install libatlas-base-devpip3 install tensorflow Read more about this project on GitHub page Read Next 5 DIY IoT projects you can build under $50 Build your first Raspberry Pi project How to mine bitcoin with your Raspberry Pilast_img read more
