Danny Murphy has tipped Liverpool to be genuine title contenders over the next FIVE YEARS thanks to their new-look and youthful back line – led by ‘world class’ centre-back Virgil van Dijk. The Reds showcased their newfound defensive qualities and resilience in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. For so long Liverpool have relied on their near-peerless attacking force to win games and get the team out of trouble, but their defensive issues have ultimately come back to haunt them in their recent pushes for top honours – including in the Premier League and Champions League. But Murphy insists the arrivals of Dutch defender Van Dijk and Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson have fixed Liverpool’s long-term defensive woes. And the former midfielder believes the current Reds side is one which can ‘regularly compete on all fronts’ over the next five years. Liverpool put in an impressive defensive display against Arsenal “This group showed me against a really good Arsenal side that Liverpool now don’t really have to play brilliant football and be sensational going forward when they can defend like that.“Plus, they’ve got a goal goalkeeper behind them now who’s got confidence.“This back-four could potentially be together for the next five or six years.“Van Dijk has just turned 27 but as a centre-half you can plan until you’re 32 or 33 comfortably, we’ve seen that over the years. However, he concedes it’s unlikely the club will end their wait for a Premier League title this season, despite being only two points behind leaders Manchester City after 11 games.Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White on Monday, he said: “Liverpool haven’t played regularly to the heights they did at times last season, but they look comfortable defensively now.“Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold – that back-four now is looking like a really balanced unit that, with its age, for the next five years could be the reason why Liverpool can compete on all fronts regularly.“Do I think this season is going to be their year? I hope so but I don’t think so, because Manchester City have a more creative and fluid midfield.“But Liverpool’s back-four as a collective look really special. 2 2 Van Dijk and Gomez have developed a solid partnership at the back for Liverpool “Liverpool’s defence could be the reason the club compete on all fronts over the next five years!”🗣️ Danny Murphy says #LFC can dominate in England and Europe over the next five years with their current defensive line-up!Do you agree? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/XGVuHepP4y— talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) November 5, 2018“Van Dijk has got to be in the best two or three centre-halves in world football at the moment, he is absolutely awesome in every aspect of his game. He’s a wonderful footballer.“So I’m really enthused as a Liverpool fan and an ex-Liverpool player.“I think this is going to be the bed rock of what gives Liverpool a chance of success over the new few years.”Listen back to Danny Murphy on talkSPORT above!
