The first wave of nurse consultant posts was announced last month by HealthSecretary Alan Milburn. The 141 posts cover a wide range of specialities, from mental health topaediatric intensive care, and are allocated to NHS Trusts nationwide. They were selected from over 300 submissions received from hospitals. Post holders, who will start taking up their appointments over the next twoto three months, will earn between £27,460 and £42,010 and spend a minimum of50 per cent of their time working directly with patients.
