PNG relay team off to World Championships

first_imgPNG will be sending a strong men’s team to take part in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Relay Championships in the Bahamas next weekend.Athletics PNG president Tony Green said the PNG team will only be taking part in the 4 x200 metre event. He said this was because the other events such as the 4×100 metre and 4×400 metres were restricted to only the top 24 teams in the world.More than 850 athletes are expected to take part in the championships which runs from the 25th to the 26th of May. The four athletes from PNG are: Kupun Wisil, Nelson Stone, Kevin Kapmatana and Theo Piniau.Green said that apart from taking part in the IAAF championships, there were also other championships in the USA that PNG had taken part in. He said this would benefit our athletes in their preparations for the Commonwealth games.Green said the reason there wasn’t a women’s team from PNG taking part in the IAAF championships was because of the unavailability of the country’s top four sprinters in Toea Wisil , Betty Burua , Sharon Kwarula and Donna Koniel.last_img read more
