On the Revival of a Suffering Genre the Music Magazine

first_img“If you’re going to have a magazine in 2012, there better be a point to it,” says Mike Albanese, publisher of SPIN. In what may seem like an obvious statement, Albanese manages to summarize the movement of the entire magazine industry. Print is often no longer substantial enough to act as a publication’s sole business; but it still holds a place in editorial strategy and audience fondness. SPIN, with a lowered print frequency, slashed rate base and realigned digital focus, is positioning its print product to be just that.The new SPIN, now published six times a year, has a larger trim size (up 9.5” x 12”) and varied textures in-book. The cover has a matte finish (similar to Conde’s WIRED cover treatment), but opening pages of the magazine are still glossy and bright. About a third of the way through the book, paper stock switches back to the rougher stuff the cover lives on. The revamp follows a mass changing-of-the-guards at the publication. Former editor-in-chief Doug Brod and publisher Malcolm Campbell left in June; Caryn Ganz joined as online editor-in-chief, Christopher R. Weingarten as senior editor and David Bevan as associate editor in October. Ganz is the first to hold this position with the magazine.Cutting print frequency and dropping rate bases (SPIN is down from 450,000 to 350,000) is often seen as a “trouble” flag in the industry. However, in this case, I applaud the magazine for thinking strategically and resizing its content portfolio. One might even view it as brave: downsizing print presence eliminates advertising opportunity, and risks alienating the Luddites of the SPIN audience. Such a shift is a gamble, even in the most sturdy media landscape.Music rags are suffering: according to the latest FAS FAX report from ABC, Rolling Stone single copy sales fell 18.2 percent from second half 2010 to second half 2011. Subscriptions remained basically flat, eking up three percent YOY in the last six months of ’11. SPIN’s single copy sales dropped 35.2 percent from the last half of 2010 to the same period in 2011; total subscriptions are down 1.2 percent. To reassess and reorganize may give these brands a second chance in the digital-first music scene, whereas plodding along in the same manner would lead to one end: closure. 2012 will tell whether the new SPIN (somewhere between a traditional magazine and coffee table book, according to Albanese) will be able to ride out the transition. On SPIN’s editorial strategy, Albanese says the print magazine will serve as a “broad” platform for content; a home for cultural fodder surrounding the music industry. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite.For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. The Cherokee is made in Belvidere, Illinois. Like its two-row Passport sibling, the three-row Pilot offers parent-focused technology like Cabin Talk as well as myriad standard driver-assistance features through the Honda Sensing tech suite. Honda’s largest crossover offers up nearly 84 cubic feet of cargo space. Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 engine shows up again, making a serviceable 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic transmission while lower trims have to make do with a six-speed auto. The Honda Pilot is made in Lincoln, Alabama. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds.The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. As it turns out, it’s pretty darn affordable for the quality it packs.The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A220 will start at $32,500 for a front-wheel-drive model. If you live in snowier climes or just want the extra peace of mind of four driven wheels, adding all-wheel drive tacks another $2,000 onto the equation.There’s a solid amount of standard equipment in there, too. All A-Class Sedans get Mercedes-Benz’s new MBUX infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in addition to LED headlights and safety systems like automatic braking and hill-start assist. Its 2.0-liter I4 gas engine puts out 188 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, and it comes mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.Of course, the price only goes up from there. There are plenty of ways to send the price to the stratosphere — the 7-inch screens can be updated to 10.25-inchers, there are aesthetic packages galore and other available techy bits like keyless access and a suite of active and passive safety systems.With the A-Class Sedan’s price where it is, expect the forthcoming CLA-Class to be a bit more expensive. Not only do Mercedes’ swoopy-coupe variants typically cost more, the CLA-Class is more powerful and a little better equipped than the A-Class with frippery like gesture control. Sensex Tanks 350 Points Consumer Durable Automobile Stocks Plunge

first_imgA benchmark index of Indian equities markets Thursday provisionally closed the day’s trade 350 points or 1.33 percent down, as consumer durables, automobile, capital goods, metal and banks stocks plunged.All sector-based indices of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) ended in red.The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P BSE, which opened at 26,260.35 points, ended at 25,999.34 points, down 349.99 points or 1.33 percent from the previous day’s close at 26,349.33 points.The Sensex touched a high of 26,462.08 points and a low of 25,933.98 points in the intra-trade.Sector-wise the S&P BSE consumer durables index was down 405.05 points, followed by automobile index which was lower by 359.91 points. Capital goods index plunged 294.66 points, metal index fell by 253.38 points, bank index decreased by 223.85 points, oil and gas index declined by 202.55 points and healthcare index slipped 197.92 points.The wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also provisionally closed in red.
