While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite.For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. The Cherokee is made in Belvidere, Illinois. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. Shown here in the tough ZR2 Bison off-road spec, the Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck and one of the two midsize pickups you can get with a diesel engine. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel pumps out 186 horsepower and a delicious 369 pound-feet of twist and is mated to a six-speed automatic. The Chevy Colorado is built in Wentzville, Missouri. This midsize crossover comes to the fray with great driving dynamics and plenty of tech like the standard Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. As it turns out, it’s pretty darn affordable for the quality it packs.The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A220 will start at $32,500 for a front-wheel-drive model. If you live in snowier climes or just want the extra peace of mind of four driven wheels, adding all-wheel drive tacks another $2,000 onto the equation.There’s a solid amount of standard equipment in there, too. All A-Class Sedans get Mercedes-Benz’s new MBUX infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in addition to LED headlights and safety systems like automatic braking and hill-start assist. Its 2.0-liter I4 gas engine puts out 188 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, and it comes mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.Of course, the price only goes up from there. There are plenty of ways to send the price to the stratosphere — the 7-inch screens can be updated to 10.25-inchers, there are aesthetic packages galore and other available techy bits like keyless access and a suite of active and passive safety systems.With the A-Class Sedan’s price where it is, expect the forthcoming CLA-Class to be a bit more expensive. Not only do Mercedes’ swoopy-coupe variants typically cost more, the CLA-Class is more powerful and a little better equipped than the A-Class with frippery like gesture control. Kim, and Walter Hu, from the University of Texas at Dallas, has published their study in a recent issue of Nano Letters.In their study, the researchers lithographically fabricated silicon nanowires with diameters of just 3-5 nanometers. With a diameter this small, the nanowires experience quantum confinement effects that cause the nanowires’ properties to change from their bulk values. Specifically, transistors made with the thin nanowires have improved hole mobility, drive current, and current density – properties that make the transistors operate more quickly and efficiently. The transistors’ performance even surpasses recently reported silicon nanowire transistors that use doping to improve their performance.“The significance of this research is that we have demonstrated that increasing the degree of quantum confinement of the silicon channel results in increasing the carrier mobility,” Hu told PhysOrg.com. “We provide experimental proof of the theoretically simulated high hole mobility of about 3-nm-diameter nanowires.”At first, it may seem counterintuitive that a smaller wire can have a higher mobility than a larger wire. But as the researchers explain, quantum confinement effects increase carrier mobility in the wire by confining the holes (which contribute to the current) to a more uniform range of energy than they have in bulk silicon. Whereas in bulk silicon, holes having a broad energy distribution contribute to the current, in the tiny nanowires, the energy of the holes has a much narrower distribution. Having holes with similar energy, and therefore mass, reduces carrier scattering effects in the nanowires, which in turn improves mobility and current density. By comparing the performance of tiny nanowires to similarly fabricated nanobelts, in which only the thickness dimension is confined, the researchers also show that increasing the degree of quantum confinement of the channel results in higher carrier mobility. One application that the researchers plan to pursue is using the nanowires to make inexpensive, ultrasensitive biosensors, since biosensor sensitivity increases as nanowire diameter decreases. “As required by our funding (NSF Career Award), our immediate plan is to explore biosensing of protein with these types of tiny nanowire transistors,” Hu said. “We believe such small-diameter nanowires with intrinsic high performance can have a major impact on biosensing, as they are expected to provide ultimate sensitivity down to a single molecule with a better signal-to-noise ratio.”In addition to biosensing, the new high-performance transistors could have an impact on CMOS scaling, which is becoming increasingly difficult. The researchers are currently looking for funding in order to explore this area.“These transistors can have an impact on CMOS scaling due to the fact that performance actually increases with decreasing diameter,” Hu said. “Arrays of nanowire transistors with tiny nanowires could be made to achieve high performance without requiring new processing techniques. In fact, the processing can even be simplified over current techniques, as our nanowire transistors do not use highly doped complementary junctions for source/drain; eliminating high doped junctions alleviates many of the current issues in scaling down CMOS processing techniques to the nanoscale.“At large, my personal viewpoint is that silicon still has a lot of potential for nanoelectronics, and the industry may want to consider supporting research in silicon nanowire or quantum wire devices and new architectures to fully unleash the potential of silicon.
