House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California, who is Catholic, faced questions in the run-up to passage of Obama’s health care bill over her support for abortion rights in light of the church’s opposition. But with his entry into the contentious politics of climate, and his attempt to reframe the issue in moral terms, Francis opened a new chapter in the long-running debate over the intersection of politics and religion. And it was one that most Republicans did not particularly welcome.“I think the pope needs to continue to study this,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. “I think it will be given respectful treatment, but I don’t think it’s going to change a lot of votes.”___Associated Press writer Steve Peoples contributed to this report. The reactions suggested that the pontiff’s desire to translate his climate views into real action to combat greenhouse gases could fall flat, at least as far as the American political system is concerned.House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, a Catholic who invited the pontiff to address Congress later this year, said the pope is not afraid to challenge thinking on various issues. “I respect his right to speak out on these important issues,” Boehner said, but he demurred when asked whether Francis’ views, made public in an encyclical released Thursday, might spur legislative action by the Republicans who run Congress.“There’s a lot of bills out there. I’m not sure where in the process these bills may be,” Boehner said.In the encyclical, a landmark foray by the Vatican into the area of environmental policy, Francis called for a bold cultural revolution, framing climate change as an urgent moral issue and blaming global warming on an unfair, fossil fuel-based industrial model that harms the poor most. He urged people of every faith to save God’s creation for future generations. Sponsored Stories

Source = e-Travel Blackboard: G.A Australian low cost carrier, Jetstar Airways, has offered passengers $100 in travel vouchers as compensation for flying with the corpse of a man who died on a recent flight from Singapore to Auckland.Ninety minutes into the 11 hour flight, a 31 year old New Zealand man started choking and after failed attempts at CPR, passed away, the Waikato Times reported.Fellow passenger and former pilot and founder of Kiwi Air, Ewan Wilson, said nearby passengers were “visibly shaken and very shocked”.”What surprised me was the plane didn’t immediately divert, the general practice for an airline is to land as soon as possible if there is a medical emergency,” Mr Wilson told the Waikato Times.”It’s a very busy part of the world – there’s Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. We weren’t mid-Atlantic.”According to the newspaper, Mr Wilson said he would have preferred the plane turn around rather than offer travel voucher compensation.”I’m not against Jetstar and I think the cabin crew managed it very well. I just feel incredibly sad for the deceased and his partner, and I feel that going back to Singapore would have been a lot more appropriate.”A Jetstar spokesman told the newspaper the man’s partner asked for the flight to continue on to Auckland and the airline have since contacted nearby passengers to thank them for their understanding.

Image Reuters/Paul Hackett As the Games draw nearer, London has begun work on the Olympic Route Network (ORN), which links key venues, accommodation and transport hubs across the city. With up to one million extra travelers expected on each day of the Olympiad, the ORN aims to ease congestion on the host city’s streets by dedicating specific lanes to Games commuting. By doing so, London hopes to avoid difficulties like the ones experienced in Georgia, US, which lead to the American venue being dubbed “the lost city of Atlanta”. According to the BBC, Transport for London (TfL) this week announced that roadwork had been stopped so that markings for the Olympic-dedicated lanes, which measure 30 miles in length, can be painted and traffic lights adjusted. TfL said work to paint white lines and Olympic rings on the roads will be done overnight and not require road closures, BBC reported. With the first London Games Lane to come into effect on July 16, TfL is advising motorists to avoid Central London around the ORN and Games venues from mid-July, when visitors are expected to arrive in earnest. The Games Lanes will end around two days after the conclusion of the Games on August 12, before a smaller Paralympic Route Network comes into operation shortly before the Paralympics start on August 29.In related news, London & Partners, the UK capital’s official promotional organization, has launched the London Official City Guide, a new free mobile app for visitors to the city. The app promises to keep users abreast of London’s hottest events as well as the city’s most famous and not-so-famous attractions by utilizing Google maps and an ‘easy-to-use’ search functionality packed with thousands of listings. “2012 is a phenomenal year for London and I want Londoners and tourists to explore the best of what our great city has to offer,” said London Lord Mayor Boris Johnson, who co-launched the app.“With exciting world-class cultural events popping up in every corner of the capital, there has never been a better time to explore the city, not just the well-known attractions, but the other wonderful local gems waiting to be discovered. “With so much to see and do, the app and brochure are your indispensible guide to a summer like no other.” Source = e-Travel Blackboard: M.H

The largest contributor to this trend is the United Kingdom, which is up 14% compared to the previous year.“What is interesting about the UK bookings for this period is that they are already at 78% maturity, while other major international arrival countries such as New Zealand and China are only at 34% and 21% maturity,” said GfK ForwardKeys Account Manager David Beliveau. “This tells us that UK travellers are more long term planners while New Zealand and Chinese travellers are short term planners when booking a holiday to Australia.”“Now that the majority of the UK travellers have locked in their flights to Australia they will be looking to book accommodation, tours, and other activities,” Beliveau continued. “This is the ideal time for the Australian travel sector to target these individuals.”UK bookings to Australia’s main cities Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth are currently up 13%, 17%, 15%, and 7% respectively. While UK pax per booking is predominantly 2 persons (51%), the 3 persons (12%) and 4 persons (14%) segments have increased by 28% and 24% compared to last year.Furthermore, current bookings show 27% of UK travellers will stay 14 to 21 nights, while the 9 to 13 nights and 22 nights or more segments are a respectable 21% and 20% of bookings. “If you want to capture the British leisure tourist dollars in Australia over the Christmas period, the game is predominantly for those arriving between 14 December and 10 January,” said Mr. Beliveau.GfK ForwardKeys is a daily update of forward flight bookings, looking forward up to 9 months and historically back to 2008 between any two airports in the world.*GfK ForwardKeys data as at Saturday, 22 August 2015 for the period Monday, 14 December 2015 to Sunday, 10 January 2016 versus the same period in 2014.

River Cruise Supplier day – An attention grabbing moment during Queensland’s river cruise training in Brisbane Personal Travel Managers benefit from Cruise and Airline Training Days Sydney Airline Day – An enthralled audience of NSW PTMs at TravelManagers fast moving airline training in SydneyPersonal Travel Managers benefit from Cruise and Airline Training DaysTravelManagers has an ongoing commitment to provide product training to its personal travel managers (PTMs) and to facilitate strong supplier-PTM relationships. To this end, the company’s National Partnership Office (NPO) has recently held airline training days in both Melbourne and Sydney, along with a river cruise training day in Brisbane.According to TravelManagers‘ Executive General Manager, Michael Gazal, the NPO and the attending suppliers were very happy with the number of PTMs who supported the training days.“These training days were, as always, a big hit, both with suppliers and with our PTMs, as we were able to bring together larger numbers of both in one place. We design the sessions to fit within a typical PTM’s day so that it’s accessible for as many as possible,” he explains. “We had a total of 76 PTMs attend over the course of the three days, and we put them in touch with a twelve major river cruise and airline suppliers.”Sharon Hando of Tauck River Cruises agrees that the training days are very successful from a supplier point of view.“It’s a great opportunity for us to speak to as many PTMs as possible, update them on our latest product offerings… and then get to know our industry partners better on a more informal basis when the work’s been done.”As Gazal explains, the NPO strives to provide their PTMs with a format that is both informative and fun, balancing relatively fast-paced supplier presentations and a working lunch with networking opportunities before and after the training sessions as a way to strengthen PTM-supplier relationships in a more casual setting.Gazal says the recent training days are part of a calendar of training events that are scheduled by the NPO at the start of each year and includes supplier training days such as these, destination days that are co-hosted by national or regional tourism offices, and fun events that bring together personal travel managers, NPO staff and suppliers in a relaxed environment.“Without giving too much away, our next social event is taking place in five states this month and promises to be both great fun and a great networking event,” Gazal confides.TravelManagers‘ Erin Ross, representative for Mount Cotton, attended the river cruise training day in Brisbane, and says she enjoyed the opportunity to update her product knowledge whilst catching up with colleagues at the same time.“It’s important to me that I am providing my clients with the best possible advice when they’re planning their next trip: to do that, I need to ensure that my product knowledge is constantly updated,” she explains. “These days give me direct access to many of the major players, and I really value the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with my colleagues. They’re also a lot of fun,” she adds.Venessa Keating, representative for Engadine NSW, took part in the Sydney-based airline training day, and described the supplier presentations as engaging and easy to listen to.“I loved every minute of the day and found all of the information that we were given to be extremely useful. At the end of the day I felt energised and motivated, and very grateful to each presenter for the effort they went to in showing how best to sell their product.”Another PTM who took part in the airline training days was Trish Clowes, representative for Traralgon VIC. She says she found the length of each session to be just right and appreciated having material to take home for future reference.“It was a really great day – great to have a variety of airlines covering multiple destinations including Asia and Europe, and the sessions were very interactive,” she explains.Gazal says the success of the days is self-evident when you look at the attendance numbers and the feedback from the attendees.“The ongoing support for these days by both PTMs and suppliers ensures their continued success, which in the end means we are able to deliver better service to our clients.”For more information or to speak to someone confidentially about TravelManagers please contact Suzanne Laister on 1800 019 599.About TravelManagersTravel Managers operates in all Australian States and is a wholly owned subsidiary of House of Travel, Australasia’s largest independent travel company which has a forecast turnover of $1.5 billion for 2017. The Union Cabinet, seeking to promote Medical Tourism and attract more business visitors, has expanded the scope of e-tourist visa to incorporate purposes such as short-term medical treatment, business trips and conferences. With the enlarged scope, the e-tourist visa would be rechristened as e-visa and would allow the holder dual entries for tourism and business purposes and three for medical treatment.According to the cabinet decision, the e-visa scheme will be extended to eight more countries, which would take the total number of nations that enjoy the facility to 158. In addition, e-visa would now have a validity of 60 days and can be applied for by foreign nationals up to four months ahead of the visit.“The Union Cabinet has given its approval for liberalisation, simplification and rationalisation of the existing visa regime in India and incremental changes in the visa policy decided by the ministry of home affairs in consultation with various stakeholders,” stated a government release following the Cabinet meeting.“The approval will facilitate entry of foreigners for tourism, business and medical purposes. This is expected to stimulate economic growth, increase earnings from export of services like tourism, medical value travel and travel on account of business and to make ‘Skill India,’ ‘Digital India,’ ‘Make in India’ and other such flagship initiatives of the government successful,” the release added.Tourists, businessmen or people coming for treatment or to attend conferences or even for film shoots would be covered under the new category of visa, which was first mooted by the Commerce Ministry following a suggestion by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to boost services trade. The long-term, multiple-entry visa would be given up to 10 years, however, under this category, the visitor would not be allowed to work or stay permanently.Apart from those covered under 10-year travel and trade visa policy, citizens of other countries would be offered five-year multiple visas for travel and trade. As per the proposal, if a foreigner is granted long-term, multiple-entry non-working or non-permanent stay visa and his or her stay is restricted to 60 days on a visit, the government may waive the visa fee as well. But the visitors have to give biometric details and fulfil certain security obligations. The plan is part of the Commerce Ministry’s initiatives to boost India’s services trade.
